How Tenant Support Helpline Helped a Tenant Secure Over £30,000 in Compensation and Repairs
· The problem:
Mrs B’s home had persistent leaks, damp and mould. Cracking plaster and falling
plasterboard made the conditions unsafe; Mrs B was injured and needed hospital
treatment. Her granddaughter also had to leave her bedroom.
· How the claim was built: Tenant
Support Helpline gathered photographs of the damage, medical reports and
statements explaining how the conditions affected the family. It then took the
claim to county court.
·
The outcome:
The court awarded Mrs B £4,200 in compensation and required the landlord
to carry out repairs estimated at £27,792. Together, those figures
total £31,992.
The £27,792 was the estimated cost of repairs, not compensation paid to the
tenant.
· The wider impact:
Mrs B was temporarily relocated while the repairs were undertaken. Tenant
Support Helpline says she returned to the repaired home in July 2023.
·
What this shows:
Tenant Support Helpline helped turn photographs, medical evidence and the
family’s account into a court claim that secured both compensation and
substantial repairs. The organisation assists social housing tenants.
